The 4D Personal Portrait

Find a clearer sense of what fits you.

Your Portrait shows how you make decisions, what gives you energy and what drains it, what you truly value, and where you are most useful to others. It is for someone choosing a direction, and for someone reconsidering a life that looks right and has felt wrong.

  • An online assessment, about twenty minutes.
  • Your personally written Portrait, about twenty‑nine pages.
  • A private forty‑five‑minute conversation with Doug, and his book.
See what arrives

$349, one time. Or two payments of $189.

It has helped me to truly become aware of who I am, my motivators, values, and helped me to understand why some things in my life do not feel right.P. A.

Doug at his desk in Thailand, a 4D Personal Portrait open on the screen, rice fields beyond the window.

After your Portrait, you will understand

  • why some work and some people drain you, and others give you energy
  • how you make decisions, and why that may have been mistaken for a flaw
  • which of your values are truly yours, and which you inherited
  • the kinds of roles and places where you do your best work
  • what to do next with the decision in front of you

If one of these sounds like you

A career decision. A marriage. Retirement. A restlessness that will not explain itself. After enough of these conversations I began to notice the same few sentences arriving, in different voices, from people whose lives could hardly look more different on paper.

  • I thought I’d finally feel free. But instead, I just feel empty.A few months into retirement
  • I’ve spent forty years trying to prove something. The problem is, I don’t know who I’ve been trying to prove it to.After a successful career
  • I don’t even know what I enjoy anymore.Years of meeting everyone else’s needs
  • Why does everything feel so hard?Sailing into the wind for a long time
  • I don’t feel like myself anymore.Usually called burnout. Usually something deeper.
  • How do I know what I’m supposed to do with my life?Facing a first real decision about direction

Some people come to this early, facing choices about direction and wanting to build from something real instead of borrowed expectations. A good early decision about a career spares a person a great deal of discomfort twenty years on. Others arrive after decades on a path that looked right and stopped fitting, in their work, their relationships, or their marriage. Some are exhausted without knowing why. Some keep finding themselves in the same painful patterns and cannot understand why.

If one of these is yours, the Portrait was made for that question.

What clients say

Thanks to Dr. Doug, we avoided a big detour and found clarity and confidence about directions that truly fit who we are.

I can’t thank Dr. Doug enough for guiding my 19‑year‑old grandson and me through the assessment. For me, it confirmed that my high-I strengths were a perfect fit for sales, something I wish I’d known earlier. For my grandson, it was a game changer. We assumed sales might be a good path, but the results showed it wasn’t aligned with his natural style. Thanks to Dr. Doug, we avoided a big detour and found clarity and confidence about directions that truly fit who we are. He has a rare gift for turning complex insights into clear, personal guidance. We’d recommend him to anyone.

S. B.

It felt personal and truly connected to me, rather than being something general that could apply to anyone.

Reading my Personal Portrait was a very meaningful experience for me. I was surprised by how well it described different parts of my personality, my values, my strengths, and the way I see life. Some parts felt very familiar, while others gave me a new way of looking at myself. It made me stop, think, and understand myself a little better.

What I appreciated most was the care and thought behind the report. It felt personal and truly connected to me, rather than being something general that could apply to anyone.

I would honestly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to understand themselves better. Sometimes, seeing yourself through someone else’s perspective can help you notice things you may not have seen before.

I’m truly grateful for the time, care, and thought that went into creating my Personal Portrait. It has given me a deeper understanding of myself and some meaningful things to reflect on as I move forward in life.

Our one‑on‑one discussion was extremely valuable.

I am so grateful for the information I received from the personal portrait. It has helped me to truly become aware of who I am, my motivators, values, and helped me to understand why some things in my life do not feel right. Our one‑on‑one discussion was extremely valuable.

What your Portrait covers

Every conversation I have had about a career, a relationship, a retirement, or a restlessness eventually found its way to one of four questions. The Portrait takes each in turn, and then shows how they have been shaping one another.

  • Who am I?
  • Where do I belong?
  • What truly matters to me?
  • What is mine to contribute?
Layer one

Natural Rhythm

How do I naturally move through the world?

How you make decisions, how you communicate, and how you respond under pressure when nobody is watching. It also shows where your energy goes when you stop performing for other people.

This way of moving through the world shows up in childhood, long before anyone teaches us what success is supposed to look like, and it stays recognizably yours.

A river bending through a forested valley, seen from a high rim at dawn.
A river does not apologize for flowing differently than another river.
Layer two

Natural Fit

Where does that life most naturally flourish?

Where you do your best work. Your Portrait shows the roles, settings and kinds of people that give you energy, the ones that slowly wear you down, and what others already come to you for.

A person can be highly qualified for work that quietly diminishes them, and the difference almost never shows up in a job title.

Orchids flourishing inside an old glasshouse in warm afternoon light.
No amount of determination makes an orchid into a cactus.
Layer three

Inner Compass

What will I remain faithful to when the path becomes costly?

Which values have actually been steering your decisions, including the ones you have never named. It separates the values you chose from the ones you inherited, and shows what you are unwilling to lose.

If I asked you to name your deepest values, the list would be sincere and incomplete. A calendar, a bank statement and your hardest decisions tell a more honest story.

An old brass compass, lid open, resting on weathered wood.
A compass does not eliminate uncertainty. It provides orientation.
Layer four

Inner Spark

What has my life been preparing me to give away?

What you have to give. It names what you have been doing for other people since childhood, usually without noticing, and the motivations behind your resilience, joy and sense of meaning.

Contribution is a verb long before it becomes a role.

The first candle lost nothing by sharing its light.

See inside a Portrait

Three pages from a real Portrait, shared with the owner’s permission. Every Portrait is written for one person, so yours will read like you.

Layer One, Natural RhythmHow you are wired, in plain language: what gives you life, and what wears you down.
Your three selvesThe self others see, the self under pressure, and the self you see, side by side.
Layer Four, Inner SparkThe quiet attitudes that give you stamina and joy, and what happens when they go hungry.

Then we talk it through, one on one

Once the portrait arrives, take your time with it. Read it slowly. Let it sit for a few days if it wants to. Then, when you are ready, we sit down for forty‑five minutes on Zoom, just the two of us.

I stopped trying to solve problems some time ago. Now I listen for questions. What brings someone to the conversation is always real, and it is rarely the deepest thing. A job that no longer fits often turns out to be a conversation about environment. A hesitation before decisions often turns out to be a gift that has been measured against someone else’s for forty years.

When we talk, we look at how your four layers fit, and I listen for the question underneath them. Where they strengthen each other. Where they have been working against each other, and what that has quietly been costing you. There is no agenda and nothing to prepare. We leave with one honest next step. In my experience it is rarely a dramatic one. Usually it is small, and clear, and it has been waiting a long while to be noticed.

Scheduled after your portrait arrives. Held on Zoom, recorded, and sent to you afterward.

Doug, on what happens when you talk it through. About a minute and a half.

What people discover

Four people from conversations over the years, told as they appear in A Quiet Return.

Natural Rhythm

A man I spoke with believed he lacked confidence because he consistently hesitated before making important decisions. As we explored his experience, it became clear that thoughtful reflection was not his weakness. It was one of his greatest gifts.

Nothing about him needed fixing. Something about him needed honoring.

Natural Fit

A woman described feeling increasingly disconnected from work she had loved for years and assumed she needed a different profession. The work still mattered deeply to her. What had changed was the environment around it.

She did not need a different calling. She needed a different place in which to live it.

Inner Compass

A man I spoke with had placed family at the very top of his list of values, and he meant it. When we looked honestly at his calendar, the hours had flowed toward work year after year. An older value slowly became visible beneath the list, one he had absorbed as a boy watching his father: love is proven by providing.

Once he could see it, he could finally decide whether it still deserved the authority it had been given.

Inner Spark

A teacher told me, a year into retirement, that her contribution was finished because the classroom was gone. Then she mentioned a box of letters from former students. Almost none of them mentioned the subject she taught. They remembered that she noticed them.

Her spark had never been the curriculum. It was the noticing, and noticing does not retire.

About Doug

A fellow traveler

My name is Doug.

For twenty‑one years I was a dentist. Regular dentistry, mostly, with a longstanding interest in myofascial pain and the way tension settles into the jaw and face. What I noticed over those years was not something I set out to study. It was just there. Pain rarely arrived alone. It came alongside pressure, worry, and things people were carrying quietly. I did not do anything with that observation at the time. I only kept noticing it.

That career ended in a single day when a neurological condition took it from me. What followed was harder and slower than I expected: the losses, the rebuilding, and the questions that finally had room to open.

Since then I have trained and certified as a behavioral consultant with PeopleKeys, hosted several hundred long conversations on the Inspire Vision Podcast, spent thousands of hours reading across psychology, neuroscience, and the contemplative traditions, written a book called A Quiet Return, and moved to Thailand, which slowed me down enough to notice things I had overlooked for decades.

Looking back, I no longer see separate careers. It was always the same thread. Helping people come home to themselves.

I am not a guru or an authority. I am someone a little further down the same road, turning back to say the water is fine.

Built on the PeopleKeys® 4D assessment, used by businesses for over forty years.

If it does not describe you, tell me within 14 days of receiving it, and I will refund it. I would rather return the money than have someone carry a description that is not theirs.

Doug writes each portrait and holds each conversation himself, so he takes on a small number at a time. Your answers are encrypted, never sold or rented, and read only by him. More in the questions below.

Things people ask before they begin

Is this a personality test?

It starts with one, then goes further. The assessment includes DISC, one of the most widely used personality measures, and a personality report answers the question, what am I like? That is useful, and it is not enough. The Portrait is after a different question: how do the essential dimensions of my life influence one another? I have watched an assessment become an identity, with people introducing themselves by a label and declining things because “that’s just how my type is.” I have no interest in handing anyone a label. No report has ever captured the mystery of a person.

What is it built on?

My certification with PeopleKeys, whose 4D Report brings together DISC, TEAMS, Values, and the Behavioral Attitudes Index. That instrument was designed for hiring, teams, and leadership, and its DISC is the same one behind the Maxwell Leadership DISC assessment, and both come from the same publisher. Over a number of years I reworked its four-dimensional way of seeing a person into something quieter and more personal. Your results come to me as a business assessment, and I write them into a personal portrait. The four layers, their names, and their interpretation are my own. The 4D Personal Portrait is independent of PeopleKeys, is not affiliated with or endorsed by them, and is not a substitute for their validated assessments.

Is this for someone just starting out?

Yes, and I wish more people came to it then. A young person choosing a direction is usually choosing from borrowed expectations, because those are the only ones anyone has handed them. Knowing your natural rhythm and the environments where it comes alive before the first big decision spares a great deal of discomfort twenty years on. The portrait reads the same four layers at twenty-two as at sixty-two. The conversation is simply about a different set of choices.

One grandmother read hers alongside her nineteen‑year‑old grandson. The family had assumed sales would suit him. His portrait pointed somewhere else, and they found that out before he spent years discovering it the long way.

Is it useful for a couple, or a parent and a grown child?

Very. Two people who each hold their own portrait tend to spend less energy on who is right and more on seeing how differently they are built: one decides quickly and one needs to sit with things, one is restored by people and one by quiet, and neither of those is a flaw. A second portrait for someone close to you is $70 less, and I am glad to read the two side by side in the conversation.

What if it gets me wrong?

Then say so. A page can simply be wrong, and I would rather know than have you carry it. Often, though, a disagreement becomes the most useful part of our conversation, because it points at a place where an adaptation and an identity have been confused, and you are the only one who can say which is which. Your own reading of yourself stays in the room. If the portrait as a whole misses, tell me within 14 days and I will refund it.

Is this therapy, or coaching?

Neither, in the way those words are usually used. I am a behavioral consultant, not a therapist. The Portrait is a map of how you are wired, and one conversation about what the map shows, and I would never call that treatment. If what surfaces needs more than a map, I will tell you so plainly.

How long does the assessment take?

About twenty minutes. It is best completed in one sitting, at whatever pace is yours, and it asks about ordinary things rather than asking you to rate yourself.

How soon will I get my Portrait?

Usually within 48 hours of finishing the assessment. I prepare each one personally.

What if I live in a different time zone?

Most people do. I live in Thailand and talk with people all over the world. You choose a time from my calendar, shown in your own time zone, and we meet on Zoom.

Can I give a Portrait as a gift?

Yes. When you buy it, tell me who it is for, and I will send the assessment to them directly.

Do I need to read the book first?

No. It arrives with the portrait and most people read the two side by side. The book explains the four layers in general. The portrait is the four layers about you.

Do I need to take the free quiz first?

No. The Inner Landscape reads where you have been resting lately. The Portrait reads how you are built. They are useful side by side, and if you have taken the quiz I will have read your result before we talk.

When is the conversation scheduled?

After the portrait arrives and you have had time to sit with it. There is no deadline on that. Some people book the same week, and some let it sit a while first. I understand both. The conversation is on Zoom, recorded, and the recording is yours.

Is anything ongoing after this?

No subscription, no program, nothing to renew. I hope you think of the portrait as something you return to rather than something you complete. The questions that matter at thirty are rarely the ones that matter at sixty-five, and the map reads differently at each elevation.

Who sees my answers?

The assessment itself is hosted by PeopleKeys, a behavioral assessment company that has been doing this work for over forty years and is certified under the EU‑U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Your responses are encrypted, and they are never sold or rented to anyone. When you finish, your results come to me. I am the only person who reads them, and they are never used for anything other than writing your portrait. If at any point you would like your responses removed, write to me and I will take care of it.

I mention all of this only so you can answer honestly. The portrait is only as true as what you bring to it, and honesty is easier when you know where your words are going.

See how you are built, and talk it through with Doug.
